YMCA of Southeastern Connecticut to Close Facility

YMCA of Southeastern Connecticut to Close Facility Permanently
All on-site and off-site programs and services are slated to cease effective April 30th, 2009

Norwich, CT (March 25th, 2009) – The Board of Directors of the YMCA of Southeastern Connecticut has decided to close permanently the Y’s facility at 337 Main Street in Norwich and cease all on-site and off-site programs and services, effective April 30th.

“The board is deeply saddened by this decision,” said Michael Lahan, the Board’s spokesperson, “We needed a miracle on Main Street, but we did not get it” says Lahan. “The unfortunate economic conditions and our YMCA’s own financial challenges, has made sustaining services impossible. In the end, closing the facility was our last, but only, resort. We simply cannot afford to keep it open.”

The YMCA is committed to developing a plan for an orderly wind down of its programs. “We hope to provide an ample opportunity for our members, residents and childcare participants to make the arrangements necessary for their continued well being” said Lahan, “and we shall provide whatever assistance we can to aid them in their efforts.”

“The YMCA of Southeastern Connecticut has served the children, families and communities of New London County with pride and distinction for more than 100 years. We have always tried to make our programs available to all, regardless of individual or family resources, but the economy has severely compromised our abilities to continue to do so. We have believed strongly in our mission to provide opportunities for all to reach their full potential through programs that develop healthy spirit, mind and body,” said Lahan, “and we deeply regret the circumstances that prevent us from continuing to do so.

Questions should be directed to Michael Lahan, Member, Board of Directors, mlahan@snet.net.
